summer comes
in a blaze of heat
with sunny smiles
and dusty feet

Then seasons change
to muddy roads
monsoons and mangoes
leapfrogs and toads

Spring is pretty
but short and sweet
when you can smell the grass
from your garden seat

Autumn is English
in red, yellow and brown
Autumn is Indian
Whenever leaves fall down"

Balanced Diet

Balanced Diet

* Maintenance of Food Quality
*Food Cleanliness
* Preservation of Food
A balanced diet have all the nutrients that our body needs, in right quantities. It contains various groups of food stuff, such as energy giving foods, body building foods and protective foods in correct proportions.

The components of a balanced diet differ according to age, sex and physical activity of an individual.

Maintenance of Food Quality

• Maintenance of food quality means preventing the food from being contaminated or spoiled.

• Food can get contaminated or spoiled at various stages from

its production to consumption. Food hygine is essential to avoid food poisoning that can be attained by ensuring all the activities involved in the production handling, storage, distribution, cooking and serving of all types of food are hygienic.

Food Cleanliness

Food cleanliness refers to the food, we eat must be hygienic.

Food cleanliness promotes health, whereas dirty and unhygienic food spreads disease.

The unhygienic food may be in the form of stored vegetables exposed to flies and insects, the unwahsed raw food materials (carrots, tomatoes and fruits) etc.

The people eating these food items are likely to fall sick. Eating cut fruits and drinking sugarcane, vegetables and fruits juice exposed to dust and flies should be avoided in order to keep oneself healthy

Preservation of Food

There are two types of food storage, dry storage and cold storage.

dry The non-perishable foods (sugar, flour, cereals and food grains) are stored through the process of dry storage. The perishable foods are stored in cold storage or d place.

On a commercial scale, fruits, vegetables and other perishable foods are stored in large cold storage or d freezers.

Cleanliness and proper handling of foods, utensils and deep
dishes are of primary importance.

The cleaning of untensils and crockery should be done with hot water using ash or a good quality detergent immediately after they have been used.

For drinking, washing of dishes and cooking of food, clean and safe water should be used.

Many practices, such as peeling, cutting, washing and cooking of vegetables, fruits and cereals often destroy certain vitamins and minerals present in them. Pasteurisation is the method to storage of milk.

Removed off water from fruit and vegetable is called
dehydration.

Food material can be stored for longer duration by adding extra sugar or salt. This is done because extra sugar or salt plasmolyse the microbial cells, leading to their death.
